In Theaters: The Stepfather (2009)

Before I begin, I must make a confession that I hope will not damage my credibility: I have never seen the 1987 cult classic, "The Stepfather". Therefore, my review of this film, the 2009 remake, is from the viewpoint of a person who had not been formally introduced to this intriguing storyline before. With that out of the way, let's jump right into the here and now. I don't necessarily mind PG-13 horror and, in some ways, I feel that it can be a nice way to introduce viewers to the genre that we all know and love. On the other hand, I have a problem with films that have been edited down from an R-rating to achieve the more marketable PG-13, usually resulting in a lack of cohesion and an overall aura of cheapness. So, I was not as offended by the idea of reviewing this film as most other horror critics were; in fact, I welcomed the opportunity. "The Stepfather" was always designed to be released as a more teen-friendly film and so I was fairly sure that its rating would not hurt it. Was I right...or dead wrong?
