Все дело было в том, что в сценах насилия и умерщвления использовались настоящие животные. Руджеро Деодато оправдывался тем, что «местные жители в любом случае их съели». Кстати, ему самому пришлось некоторое время скрываться. Так как защитники животных всерьез угрожали ему смертью.

Фильм был запрещён в 60 странах мира, что сделало его самым «запрещенным» фильмом в мире.
